Is TI-Nspire™ technology meant to replace any current TI educational technology?
The TI-Nspire family of products is not replacing any current products. It is an additional option in the TI product line, and TI will continue to sell and provide support for all our current products.

The TI-73™, TI-83 Plus, and TI-84 Plus family and TI-Navigator™ system are research-proven technologies shown to increase student achievement. They continue to be a strong solution and great choice for the math and science classroom. TI-73, TI-83 Plus, and TI-84 Plus/TI-84 Plus Silver Edition units will continue to be sold and supported through educator professional development, activities and operating system updates. The TI-Navigator system for the TI-73/TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus families will continue to be available.

It is your choice when and if you take advantage of the additional functionality that TI-Nspire technology offers. TI-Nspire technology makes the classroom transition easier with the TI-83/4 Plus keypad. New units could be purchased as TI-Nspire handhelds and used with the TI-84 keypad until it is feasible to transition the entire classroom to TI-Nspire functionality.

The TI-Nspire CAS handheld combines the new features of TI-Nspire technology with computer algebra capability. Our other CAS models - the TI-89 Titanium and Voyage 200 - will continue to be offered and supported. Note that the TI-84 Plus keypad is not available on the TI-Nspire CAS handheld.

Is TI-Nspire CAS technology meant to replace the TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator or Voyage™ 200 personal learning tool?
No. The TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator and Voyage 200 personal learning tool will continue to be offered and supported by TI. Because the TI-Nspire CAS handheld and computer software combine new TI-Nspire features with computer algebra system capabilities built in, they offer educators an added option to incorporate CAS into their lessons.

What is a TI-84 Plus keypad with the TI-Nspire handheld?
Two snap-in keypads are included with each TI-Nspire handheld, a TI-Nspire keypad and a TI-84 Plus Keypad. Each keypad snaps in to provide educators and students with a different set of features and functions. The TI-Nspire Keypad provides the unique new capabilities, while the TI-84 Plus Keypad provides the familiar operation and functions of the TI-84 Plus family of graphing calculators. The TI-84 Plus keypad for TI-Nspire enables the TI-Nspire handheld to be used side-by-side in the same classroom with existing TI-84 or TI-83 Plus models, allowing a comfortable transition to TI-Nspire capabilities. Note that the TI-84 keypad is not available on the TI-Nspire CAS handheld and may not be included with TI-Nspire handheld when sold outside of North America.

Can I mix TI-Nspire handhelds with TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus graphing calculators in my classroom, at the same time?
Yes. The TI-84 Plus Keypad provides the same keystrokes and functionality as TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus family graphing calculators. This compatibility enables the TI-Nspire handhelds to be used in the classroom side-by-side with these existing models allowing a comfortable transition to new TI-Nspire capabilities. Note that the TI-84 Plus Keypad is not available for TI-Nspire CAS handhelds.

For which subjects can I use TI-Nspire technology?
We recommend that educators incorporate TI-Nspire technology into their lessons for secondary and collegiate mathematics courses, from pre-algebra through calculus. Because TI-Nspire handhelds are designed as a platform and incorporate FLASH memory, the future potential exists for adding capabilities to address the needs of other courses.

Will Applications be able to be transferred from the TI-84 Plus to TI-Nspire handhelds?
With the TI-84 Plus Keypad snapped in, over 10 of the most popular applications are provided and have been tested for use with the TI-Nspire handheld. It is possible that other applications may be transferred to and work on the TI-Nspire handheld when in the TI-84 Plus mode, however only those popular applications that come with the TI-84 Plus Keypad have been tested.

Will Programs be able to be transferred from the TI-84 Plus to TI-Nspire handhelds?
Programs that work on the TI-84 Plus family of products should work on the TI-Nspire handheld when the TI-84 Plus Keypad is snapped in.

Will I be able to write programs on the TI-Nspire products? If so, what is the programming language? Will a software developer's kit be available?
Yes, the programming language is similar to the TI-Basic language on the TI-89 and TI-84 Plus. In our latest operating system/computer software updates for the TI-Nspire products, we have included a Program Editing environment to make writing and debugging programs even easier! Be sure to update your handheld's operating systems regularly to receive these and other enhancements to functionality.

Can I use the TI-Nspire CAS handheld and TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator in my classroom simultaneously?
Although both models feature CAS (Computer Algebra System), their functionality and user interface differences would likely affect the approaches used in exploring some concepts. This could also create operational confusion among students. In addition, the TI-Nspire CAS handheld offers new and unique pedagogical benefits that the TI-89 Titanium does not.

What are the differences between the TI-89 Titanium and TI-Nspire CAS?
The TI-89 Titanium is currently better for:

  • Graphing types: Polar, Sequence, 3D (Primarily Higher Education), and Differential Equations
  • Statistics
  • Data collection - if they plan to use more probes in addition to CBR2/Go Motion! and EasyTemp
  • Other features: Programming, Engineering applications (like ME*Pro), Symbolic Math Guide (SMG)
The TI-Nspire CAS technology is better for:
  • Graphing capabilities: Geometry Integrated, Parametrics, Interactive transformation graphing, Inequalities graphing
  • Data analysis and plots: Integrated statistical analysis and interactive data plotting and Integrated List and Spreadsheet capabilities
Would it work to have a mixed classroom with TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS handhelds?
Yes. As long as you are not using the CAS features, the interface and most of the functionality are the same between the two handhelds, so they could be used side-by-side in the same classroom. A couple of things to note:

  • While the PSAT*, SAT* and AP* exams allow graphing calculators with CAS features, some other standardized exams (ACT and some state exams) do not allow units with CAS
  • Only the TI-Nspire handheld offers the snap-in TI-84 Plus Keypad and thus compatibility with existing TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus graphing calculators
Can files be exchanged between a TI-Nspire handheld (with TI-Nspire Keypad) and a TI-Nspire handheld (with TI-84 Plus Keypad)?
No. TI-Nspire files are a different type than TI-84 files.

Is there a Spanish language operating system for TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS technology?
Yes. The Spanish language operating system option, as well as other operating system updates, is available beginning with version 1.3 of the TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire operating system and computer software. Visit education.ti.com/latest for the latest operating system updates.

Can files be exchanged between TI-Nspire computer software and TI InterActive!™ software?
No. TI-Nspire files are a different type than TI InterActive! files.

How do I activate Press-to-Test to block access to certain geometry features so they are not accessible during exams?
It is easy to start and stop the built-in Press-to-Test feature on TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS handhelds. A blinking LED light tells you when the device is operating in the Press-to-Test mode. To activate this feature on TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS handhelds, go to Press-to-Test.

Will TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS handhelds and software be available through Workshop Loan?
Yes. TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS handhelds and "30-day Trial" versions of TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS software are expected to be available from TI's Workshop Loan Program.

Is TI-Nspire technology included in TI's Technology Rewards program?
